You guys!! Shawn Mendes’ much much much anticipated album Illuminate drops tonight at midnight and we can’t waaaaait! During the hour leading up to its release, he’ll be hosting a pop-up special on Beats 1 radio, previewing a few tracks and talking about inspiration, his songwriting process and the meaning behind some of his lyrics, like one of our fave songs of the summer, “Treat You Better.”
While we count down the hours until we can tune in (at 11 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT), we’ve got a few exclusive tidbits from Shawn about the new tracks, relationships and more:
On his new sound:
“‘Like This’ was the first or second song I wrote for the album—the first true piano ballad that I’ve ever really done where I really got to find my voice and sing it out and really change my whole perspective on who I am as a singer.”
On his chill approach to relationships:
“‘No Promises’ is one of the coolest and most exciting songs that I ever wrote. It’s about how in a relationship sometimes it’s just better to go with the flow and not think about it too much. Just love, and that’s pretty much all you gotta do.”
On breaking hearts:
“‘Honest’ is about telling the truth: This is how I have to end it and I don’t mean to hurt you but we can’t be together.”
On the most surprising song on the album, “Bad Reputation”:
“I was so excited because I got to use the word ‘naked’ in it. I think out of all the songs on the album this is the most badass with the most edge. Performing this song is a complete experience in itself—you’d feel dizzy for how much of a ride it took you on.”
On the issues that are closest to his heart:
